It’s a Battle of the Bands contest on one side of Community Church’s parking lot with a Skate trick contest on the other side and vendors selling stuff in between. Promoter Sylas (sylas.net) is calling all bands, big and small, known and unknown, to come play a few songs, have some fun and a chance to win 350 bucks in cash! At the same time they are calling all skaters to bring their sweetest, smoothest and sickest tricks to the competition of S.K.A.T.E. elimination to win prizes from Getboards and Pat Alan’s Pharmacy board shops. Some shops will setup to sell their cool garb and gear. Carné Asada tasty tacos will be on the barbeque, cold smoothies will be blending, ice cream to chill, and everything else your Mom told you not to eat so much of.
Sylas.net and Community Church has teamed up to promote and produce a very first event of this kind to happen in Big Bear Lake, and already looking into an annual occurrence for the years to come. While the event is indeed hosted by a church, it should not be confused as a ‘get-em and preach at-em’ rally. It’s a ‘come play, skate and hang’ on a church’s parking lot for the common goal of new and positive relationships.
As a lot of Big Bear skaters already know, Community Church’s senior pastor Don Foor welcomes any and all skaters to roll in the parking lot at any time. Skaters are welcome and are not black listed and banned from the property –for once! Even more, Big Bear Park and Recreation District has confirmed plans to build a permanent skate park right on the church’s parking lot between the main building and the Blvd. So on-lookers will see the skate park first then a church building second, which symbolizes the intense focus on the youth of Big Bear and the bold steps its taking to connect with today’s generation and the future leaders and citizens of this town. |
