Brian "Head"Welch
Brian Welch, better known by his nickname "Head" is one of the founding members of the multi-platinum, Grammy award winning metal band, Korn. The band was credited with being the major influence in the rise of the New metal movement. While with Korn, Head won two Grammy's and sold over 30 million albums to date. In July, 2007, Head gained further acclaim as a successful author, when he released an autobiography (Harper Collins Publishers) titled, "Save Me From Myself." Immediately upon its release, the book quickly soared up the New York Times Best Seller's list. Head's debut album is a testimony to his life as he battled with drug addiction, leaving Korn, and finding spirituality.

Xtreme Choices. by Ivan Van Vuuren
This is no ordinary day in Hawaii. You can almost feel the tension. Not a cloud in the sky, turquoise blue water, people and cameras lined up along the beach with a handful of some of the world’s best tow-in-surfers ready for the big wave that could possibly get them the next cover shot or even the $60,000 prize for riding the biggest wave of the year. The stage is set. All of a sudden there’s a scramble, a monster of a wave causes the horizon to disappear, there’s shouting and excitement from the shore, jet skis and riders jockeying for position...

All You Need Is Love. by Somedude
While not a huge Beatles fan, I do love some of their lyrics. The Yellow Submarine Album had this song on it entitled “All you need is love”. The title sums up Lennon/McCartney’s views on what you need to get through life. While I disagree that ”Love” is all you need, I would put it high on my list of things you should have.
Recently a friend told me “Your Pastor sure talks about love a lot.” I think he meant it as part observation, part criticism. I took it as pure compliment. Here’s why...

New Couch. by Megan Meadors
On the news today there was a story that made me stop, and lose my breath. They had found a family of 7, dead inside their home. All of them shot to death in what the news was calling a murder/suicide. I felt instantly sick as I heard the motive as to why the family may have been found dead…”no hope.”...

This is What Christmas Means. by Adam Kenyon
Miracles are what many of us desire and seek. We are tempted to believe that if we could receive our own miracle, it would be our life’s panacea. But in Mary’s story, the astounding miracle of the virgin birth of the Messiah doesn’t fix her reality; it only serves to offer her a tiny glimpse of ultimate Glory...

Can't We All Just Get Along? by Suzzie Somebody
Well I have to admit that I feel a little bit like Jerry McGuire, when he wakes in the middle of the night and has this epiphany and begins to write. I also feel that once this is posted I will be standing alone, asking if anyone will come with me, other than a fish. Now what I am about to say may offend my friends and even some of my family, and for that I apologize, but as I type I am trying to share my heart and also gain some clarity on why I or any one else would want to be a part of this community we call believers...

Prop 8 Thoughts. by Cliff Sliger
...The amount of time, energy, and resources that Christians are spending with propaganda regarding 8. Signs, bumper stickers, sermons, standing on street corners with signs... we've become great at telling the world everything that pisses God off, but how much time have we spent telling a lost, broken, dying world about the God who loves them and wants them to know Him?...

Learn from Rats. E. Eddie Edwards
During the 1950’s, a researcher named Curt Richter at Johns Hopkins University conducted studies on rats. Two of his many studies produced some interesting results.
In the first study, Richter took the rats and held them tight in his hands. He held them in such a way that though they tried to wiggle, his firm grip prevented them from any movement. After a while, the rat would give up the struggle and lay still. Richter then put them in a deep dish filled with water and though the rats had no physical problems and they were quite capable of swimming, they would not even try to swim- they just gave up and drowned.

Long Spoons. Author Unknown
A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said, “Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like. The Lord led the holy man to two doors. He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew, which smelled delicious and made the holy man’s mouth water. The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful. But because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering. The Lord said, “You have seen Hell.”

Somebody You Should Know. by Nobody
When you think of the baddest man on the planet, you tend to think of guys like Ultimate Fighting Champion Randy Couture, Jesse James or even James Dean. But if you’ve ever seen Kyle Loza working at his craft, you might want to rethink that image.
At 5’6”, 130 pounds his physical presence might not intimidate you, but put him on a motorcycle and you’ll be in awe. Tattooed from head to toe (or at least to his neck), he looks more like the image of a punk rocker than typical Christian kid. (What is a typical Christian kid???).

Fat Christian. by Little Lady Luck
If you have ever been involved in Church or even involved in a group of Christians I am sure that you are familiar with the term “being fed”. At the very least I am sure you have heard of it, even if you had no idea what it meant. I am sorry to say that looking back over my life it is a term I have used and desperately wish I could take back. Being “fed” in my opinion is Christian-ese (like Christian slang) at its worst! However it is a very common term and lately I have been reflecting on what it really means and why I hear it used so much.

Top Ten Ways to Drive Your Friends from Christ. by E. Eddie Edwards
1). Pressure your friends to not hang around non believers. Try not to go out to dinner, parties or hang after school where there is a group of sinners. Hang only with the “anointed”.
Sure this is contrary to the example Jesus set for us but it seems like you are being so spiritual! Of course you will have limited opportunities to share but what the heck.

Ebenezer Stone. by Jon Courson
Ebenezer means “stone of help.” In setting up this stone, Samuel was saying, “up to this point, the LORD has helped us.”
Why is this important to do? Because sometimes we think, “Oh no! Things will never work out. My marriage is on the rocks. My finances are down the drain. Everything looks grim.” What we need in times like this is an “Ebenezer Stone,” which reminds us that God has never failed us, and what we fear doesn’t come to pass. Yes, there are definite challenges that come our way-but in those challenges, God always shows Himself strong. He’s always there for us...

It may be required of you tonight. by Captain Scott
“When life looks like easy street, there’s danger at the door.” -The Grateful Dead Band
Without a doubt being a Firefighter has to be the best job in the world. Running into a burning building while everyone else is running out seems crazy to some but for me, my job seems more like a long summer camp spent with some of my best friends.
We had just finished a great day. We had the usual calls and my crew was a great one that day. Lots of laughs, training in the morning, washed the fire engine, good dinner and now it was bedtime. I really didn’t think about it but if we didn’t have any more alarms and we slept all night that would’ve been fine with me.
A good night’s sleep was not to be and it was shortly after 2:00 AM when the alarm sounded. Dispatch said it was a TC (traffic collision) with injuries...

1. Your Pastor uses most of his sermons to ask for MONEY.
Churches need money to survive, the Bible teaches of giving, and Christians should give money to support their church but you really need to want to give it. GOD loves a “cheerful” giver, not a guilty giver. If it’s all about the money it’s time to blast off.
2. Your Pastor talks of “Love” but he himself never shows it.
Best Quote ever “Preach Christ always, use words if you must.” Find a church that practices GOD’s love. Truth is, the attitude of the pastor tends to filter down to the flock. If your church isn’t showin the love, they missed the main message completely.

Sometimes God will not come through as quickly as we want Him to. Mary and Martha, two friends of Jesus, faced this dilemma. Their brother Lazarus was sick. It was a serious illness. So they sent word to Jesus.

Swedish chemist and pacifist Alfred Nobel is credited for inventing dynamite. He thought it would be the invention that would end all wars. It turned out that others viewed his invention as an extremely deadly product. In 1888 when his brother Ludvig died, a French newspaper mistakenly ran an obituary for Alfred which labeled him as “the Merchant of Death”. Not wanting to go down in history with such a legacy, Nobel went on to create the Nobel Peace prizes.

Soon after getting involved in high school ministry that age old question popped up pretty quickly. No, it wasn’t whether or not God could make a pizza pocket so hot even he couldn’t eat it. The question at hand concerned God’s Will for their lives. Since I haven’t been a high schooler since, oh Miami Vice and the Rubik’s Cube were popular, I had forgotten that even in teenage years that question still holds much validity. Let me tell you, trying to figure out God’s Will can still cause much anxiety and uncertainty well into adulthood and beyond. So what exactly is God’s Will and how can we approach and answer this question will biblical truth? Like Jeopardy, I’ll take “What is God’s Will For Me” for $1,000 please Alex. |
|
What does that mean, exactly? Let me explain.
I learned very young that when I was upset, disappointed, scared, angry, lonely, sad, jealous, nervous, depressed, and so on, that people didn’t really care to see that side of me. They wanted to see a cheerful, perky, pleasant, smiling, unemotional person. A young girl with feelings wasn’t attractive. In fact, they were considered moody, unpredictable, and somewhat of a downer to be around. Or so I thought.

On a recent journey into my own Christianity, I stumbled across a question I was having trouble answering. Having been on my own personal journey with the LORD some 27 years, this ain’t my first rodeo -so the fact that I couldn’t figure this one out really bothered me. The question: “How did homosexuality rise to number one on the sin list?”

Rampage walked in my place of work (Big Bear Choppers) along with the enormous fighter Cheick Kongo, trainers and other fighting partners. He sometimes trains in the mountains of Big Bear Lake, CA because it’s relatively close to Southern California, and of the solitude and elevation (the thinner air helps train the lungs and muscles better than what the sea level can do). I saw a strong athlete, but the amazing thing about Rampage to me was his humble eyes and demeanor. He seemed special and different. Knowing he’s a believer in Christ, I had to talk with him and he was cool enough to spend time with me.

My pastor read “a thought from Jay Leno” on Sunday at our church and for some reason it really stuck with me all day, and even into the next. I thought our readers might find it interesting as well. Read it, and then let us know what you think!
The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right?

What's the Point of Church? by Obediah Bumbly
Now before everyone gets all bent out of shape about the title of this article, I am asking that you read it… think about it… then comment on it…
Recently I have been thinking a lot about church, what it really is and why we go. This thinking has led me to a statement I shared with several of my friends and family, and that statement is that I do not believe that going to church is biblical. Now I know that is going to piss some of you off but bare with me as I take you on my journey.

Christianity, MMA and the Champions of the Sport. by Robert Rousseau
At UFC 68: The Uprising, Randy “The Natural” Couture once again came through in the clutch by beating Tim Sylvia for the UFC Heavyweight Championship Belt. Of course, it’s hard to get surprised by a Couture upset victory.
After all, he’s come through under similar circumstances on numerous occasions (most recently against Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell back in 2003). However, during the after fight interview with Joe Rogan, Couture did surprise- to an extent- by affirming a religious belief that casual fans may not have been aware he held.

Interview with Actor Scott Arnold. by Andy Meadors
...I got away from God and started to walk in my own path. Huge mistake! I ended up in a posse (gang) in order to feel needed, protected, loved, and to have friends. I also started to seek out relationships with women that were truly empty. That got me in to some very deep issues that to this day I am giving it to God to be redeemed from. My friends and I would go out every weekend to some different club and end up starting fights and just causing havoc.

Rejected. by Diana Wycof
Anyone who’s ever heard the song, “Amazing Love” on Christian radio or at church more than twice probably has it memorized. It’s catchy and easy to sing so it gets stuck in my head a lot. One Sunday I saw a typo on the lyric projection during worship at our church and I had to giggle. The first line was correct, “I’m forgiven because You were forsaken,” but after that it read, “I’m rejected, You were condemned.” The actual lyrics are “I’m accepted, You were condemned,” so someone really wasn’t paying attention when they typed out the words to be sang aloud. Rather than be appalled, most people didn’t even notice. In fact, they sang it incorrectly as if they agreed and felt the impact of the music just the same.

Celebrity Death Match. by Scott MacMaster
One of the rules here at Sylas is “judge no one”, but we can’t help but wonder what’s up with the Baldwin Brothers family. At 49, Alec, the eldest of the four brothers recently learned some good lessons regarding voicemail. Don‘t leave a message you don‘t want everyone to hear -“you rude, thoughtless little pig”, as he talks to his daughter. In addition, his recent divorce proceedings are constant fodder for the tabloids. In 2000, his wife (Kim Bassinger), was quoted as saying that Alec promised to leave the U.S. if Bush defeated Gore for the Presidency. He later went on to call Vice President Cheney a “terrorist” and claimed “ he terrorizes our enemies abroad and innocent citizens here at home indiscriminately” Apparently flying under the radar isn’t Alecs’ style.

A Christian Democrat? Mellisa Howard
Or: Don’t call yourself a Republican because you think you should be since you are a Christian or because your parents are Republicans!
“…if by a liberal they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people-their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, their civil liberties… if that is what they mean by a “liberal” then I am proud to be a liberal.” –John F. Kennedy, 1960.

If it Makes You Happy. by Scott MacMaster
“If it makes you happy, it can’t be that bad. If it makes you happy then why the hell are you so sad?” - Sheryl Crow

I Wonder. by Megan Meadors
I thought of you today dear friend. I wondered what you would have done if you were here. I wondered what you thought the last time you saw the sun rise or fall. I wondered when the last time you laughed was. I wondered if you cried and I wondered if it hurt, but most of all I wondered why?

The Simple Way Out. by Shane Lee
James Brown just got done singing about the big payback. I love that song. A while back I was near Mickey Mouse’s territory with my strange group of friends listening to a dread-locked nouveau hippy from Tennessee telling his stories. He began with a mini rant on the traditionally organized church. My ears perked like a wittle wabit. There were tales of partying with the homeless in Rocky’s hood - Philly, which led to dressing wounds in the drudges of Calcutta with Mother Teresa. Her feet were crippled from always choosing the worst of the hand me down shoes.

Dare to Dream. by
If we had to ask you “what is your Big dream?”, what would your answer be? “Oh I really want to be a nurse, a fireman, a professional skateboarder” or maybe you’d answer something really dramatic like “when I’m older I really want to swim the English Channel or climb Mount Everest” For the most part each one of us, deep inside, have a big dream to become something that is special or to do something that can make a difference.

Interview with Pierre Coetzee. by Ivan van Vuuren
It has to be one of the most dangerous jobs out there. I mean who in their right mind would want to hang out of a helicopter in front of a 60 foot monster of a wave that’s about ready to eat you for lunch? Just thinking about it you can feel the tension, the spray flying into the cockpit, the roaring monster ready to swallow you up at any given second. But somebody has to do it, and when you speak to Pierre Coetzee he’ll tell you that “it’s all in a days work”.
